Anyways, Here is Day 2: My Thoughts:
salt on our feet from the water |
We are driving through the vast open lands of Utah, with nothing around for miles. I felt like I was in a scene from Thelma and Louise. Well, except I was not drinking Wild Turkey while driving, not meeting a hot guy and having wild and steamy relations and not robbing and looting along the way. Instead of 2 women on a wild adventure, I am in the car with 2 children, having a blast. But, I was drinking gas station tea (double bags!), there was a guy at the motel that was walking around with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, his hair sticking out in all directions, and only wearing a pear of jeans, bearing his pigeon chest (remember Brad Pitt walked around without his shirt on and only jeans), and we did honk while going through tunnels. Well, maybe not like the movie, but I still felt like Thelma and Louise! Yes, this is what is going through my head, making me laugh as I drive.
Our Day's Experience: We drove from Nevada to Utah along flat stretches of road. The terrain changed from brush to nothing but dirt and then to pure white land--I realized it was salt. We were in the salt flats. On the sides of the road along the freeway were miles of names and messages laid out with rocks. I pulled onto the side of the road and asked the kids of they wanted to write their names out on the salt flats. They immediately exited the car! The wind was whipping as we collected rocks and debris to spell out their names. They had a blast!
Then it was onto the Great Salt Lake. We had to walk forever to get to the water, but once we arrived, the kids entered the water immediately. We saw no signs of living things in the water. But they did find black sand bars in the water and immediately engaged in grabbing handfuls of the dark dirt and dropping it in the water. As the water dried, our bodies were encrusted with salt deposits. What fun!
